Improvements planned for key East Kilbride road
Published: Friday 15 November 2024
Work on a number of improvements along Stewartfield Way in East Kilbride is expected to be completed by October 2028.
Councillors agreed to a number of improvements for the project at a meeting of the Executive Committee.
Almost 2km of enhanced road network will be built to widen the existing carriageway on the A749 and Stewartfield Way, to enhance and facilitate new junction layouts.
There will be five improved junctions at the Mavor and Nerston roundabouts, which will be re-designed to new three or four-way traffic signal-controlled junctions, with cycle and pedestrian facilities, and a traffic signal-controlled junction constructed at the existing entrance to PlaySport.
A traffic signal-controlled junction, which would provide a new route into the Kingsgate retail area, with pedestrian and cycle facilities, is also being explored.
More than 1km of new shared cycle routes will be introduced, improving, and adding to the existing off-road cycleway adjacent to the carriageway. The cycle way will extend and tie into existing cycle routes in the area.
Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “These improvements along Stewartfield Way will greatly enhance the current road capacity and provide further opportunities for active and sustainable travel.
“We have identified areas where congestion is a problem and believe these new measures will reduce journey times and improve connectivity through the town.”
It was recently agreed that £32.2 million of the approved project budget of £62.2 million for the Stewartfield Way Capacity Enhancement project would be re-directed to the East Kilbride Town Centre Masterplan. That means £30 million will go towards the Stewartfield Way project.
The combination of these transportation and direct town centre interventions is considered the best way to bring and accelerate sustainable economic growth
Construction on Stewartfield Way is expected to begin around October 2026.
Relevant Full Business Cases for the project and associated subprojects will be developed for future presentation to the Executive Committee and City Region Cabinet.
